Random wanderings

What seems like a lifetime ago, I hosted one of the discussions on LibraryThing. I loved the idea of the site and joined. One of my fellow classmates pointed out the Early Reviewer program and I immediately signed up to snag one of the few books. Well, this week, I found out that I will be receiving an advance copy of The Spirit of the Place by Samuel Shem.

Through the Early Reviewer program, I also learned of a web site called BookCrossing. From what I can tell, people go to the site get a tracking # for a book they have read, and then drop the book in a location somewhere around them. Hopefully whoever picks up the books will find the BookCrossing # and input their location. Often books are dropped in airports and train stations. There were none dropped in Syracuse so maybe I will be the first to try it out.

Another web site someone told me about is StumbleUpon. The site takes a profile of your interests and then shows you web sites it thinks you would be interested in. You then give the web site a thumbs up or down further narrowing your profile. I have stumbled upon some interesting websites using this.

Thank you so much for sharing "StumbleUpon" here and on my blog! I spent a couple hours on it last night rating and collecting sites-- I have started to add all of the sites from 611 learning modules/ discussions that I find interesting too. What a cool way to explore the Internet and to store favorites!

Do you also have a "del.icio.us" account? I thought about starting one to access favorites from any computer, but it seems like "StumbleUpon" already serves that purpose. Does del.icio.us do anything that StumbleUpon doesn't?

Thanks again for sharing!

Wow the early reviewer program is a fantastic idea; I'm not eligible because I'm in Australia but maybe one day ...
On the question of BookCrossing, I've been meaning to sign up for years but never got around to it. I once left a book on a seat at a train station (quite accidentally--I was intending to read it on the train!) and I always like to think it went to a better place.
PS You might be wondering who I am ... you linked to my blog in your latest Second Life post (thank you!) so I thought I'd return the favour and have a look around your blog. It's very interesting. I've suggested another couple of blogs that might interest you on your latest post and your gaming in libraries post. Happy learning and blogging! I'll be interested to see what other interesting things you discover in the course of your studies!

techlearner,
Glad you are enjoying StumbleUpon. I push stumble occassionally in my wanderings and have found some really neat sites. I didn't even think to do that with my 611 sites. Thanks for the great idea.

I do not have a del.icio.us account but it is a really useful way to keep bookmarked sites in one place. That way if your computer stops working, you don't lose all of your bookmarks. (How many times has that happened to each of us?)

Rebecca,
Thanks so much for checking out my blog. You are the first person I didn't know to write a comment. LibraryThing is working on getting agreements with other countries and Australia is probably one of them. I hope it happens for you soon.
